BACKGROUND:
Born as the only child of Gustave and Anne Marchand, Marie grew up happily and sheltered, learning good manners as well as how to fulfill others' expectations besides her own ambitions. At the age of sixteen she enrolled at the University of Paris, where she found that she had a talent for physics and astronomy, the latter having fascinated her all her life.  Marie knew that after she had completed her studies she wanted to go on to Starfleet Academy and if possible be posted to a starship, to get a closer look at the stars and the space surrounding them.

Average grades but a lot of extra-curricular fun marked Marie's career as a cadet; San Francisco was a much further way from home than Paris, and for the first time ever she felt truly responsible for herself, without her parents' ever-present care and observation. And another change should take place in her life: on a pleasure trip to Las Vegas she met Pierre Larron, a happy-go-lucky entertainer and part-time gambler who swept her off her feet with his daring and exciting personality and, before a year was over, proposed to her. Marie was bedazzled and gladly accepted, and soon after her graduation from SF Academy and just before her first assignment the two were married.

However, the romance was short-lived. Returning for shore leave from the USS Wilmington she realized that Pierre's easy-going lifestyle did not adjust well to being a devoted husband when she found that during her assignment he had taken comfort in the presence of another woman, or two, or three...  Pierre was still the same unfaithful man he had been when Marie had met him, and while at that time his carefree attitude had fascinated her, it now served to open her eyes to who he really was: someone not worth staying with for a minute longer. To him, marriage was just a way of making sure  that someone would always be there for him when he returned from his adventures.  But Marie was not going to be that someone.

She went back to the Wilmington, thinking murderous thoughts about the man she was leaving behind, and considering herself a single woman again. A divorce seemed the logical step, but as long as Pierre does not agree - and to this day he hasn't - there would be too many complications in forcing one, and Marie was not about to spend her valuable time trying to break free from something that she alrealy considers nonexistent. She kept the name but discarded of the ring, and moved on to her next assignment aboard the  USS Bornholm.

Pierre did have a certain influence on Marie during the time they were together. She learned how to have fun with games of chance, how to appreciate a good drink, and how to make light of just about any situation, and so she did, sometimes with little to no respect for proper Starfleet decorum. Which did not well with her commanding officers aboard the Wilmington, nor did it meet with much approval on the Bornholm, which is why after two years of serving in space Marie has not yet received a promotion to Lieutenant: although her skills at navigation leave nothing to desire, so far she has not proven her worth as an officer.

Perhaps that is the reason why after only thirteen months Marie is once again being transferred to another ship, but moving around frequently is what she prefers, and so she feels ready to begin her assignment aboard the USS Republic.

PERSONALITY
Ironic and often cynical, Marie holds no respect for weakness, fear, and superficial affectations. While not insubordinate, she tends to challenge common rules and conventions, which has earned her vocal reprimands more than once (thankfully none of these entered her personnel file).  However, she will be fiercely loyal to those who - in her opinion - deserve it, and she does her duty impeccably where knowledge and competence are concerned.
